How do I measure my bed frame?
Lift the corner of your mattress
You are looking for the metal rail that runs along the side of the bed, underneath. On a standard frame you will also see a box spring sitting inside it.
Look at the rail’s shape end-on
An “L”-profile rail looks like a right angle with a lip along the top edge — the box spring rests inside it. A platform rail is a closed square or rectangular tube with a flat top surface.
Measure the outer width of the rail
Put a tape measure across the top of the rail, edge to edge. Write the number down. Most standard rails measure about 1-1/2″. Platform rails vary much more.
Check the remaining clearance
For Standard, check both outside and inside dimensions. For Platform, check for at least 1-3/4 inches of clear space behind the rail, as shown above. If your frame differs, send us a photo before ordering.
Edge cases
What if my frame is unusual?
The Platform bracket will not close around it. Two options work: clamp the mount to a narrower cross-member or slat if your frame has one, or use the Universal 2-Pack mounted to the headboard or nightstand with screws instead. Send us a photo and we will tell you which is the better bet for your bed.
Measure carefully and check clearance through the base’s full range of movement before you commit. Adjustable bases have moving joints, motors and wiring underneath, and a mount that clears at flat may foul when the head is raised. If the side rail is a fixed square tube in the right width range, the Platform mount generally works — but check the travel first.
Neither bed mount will clamp to a solid wooden frame, and the magnet needs a steel object to hold — not a steel surface to sit on. Use the Universal 2-Pack on a nightstand, inside a bedside drawer, or on the headboard. Secure each magnet to the wood with both screws. Tape alone is not sufficient.
You can clamp it anywhere along a suitable rail, but position it for the hand you would actually reach with, at the height your arm falls naturally over the edge of the mattress. The point of the product is that you find it without looking. Several customers mention deliberately placing it where it is not visible from the doorway but still within arm’s reach.
If it has a steel slide or a steel frame, almost certainly. Customers have reported holding a full-size fully-loaded 9mm with an optical sight, a Canik TP9 SFx with a tac light and red dot, a Taurus Judge revolver and a Stoeger STR9c. What matters is the contact patch, not the weight: polymer and rubber grips are not magnetic, so present the slide or the frame to the magnet rather than the grip.
